"Don't judge a book by it's cover"
I believe in being genuine so let's be real here; the above statement is a lie. Everyone judges a book by it's cover. Including you, including me. It's a natural instinct, that crucial first impression. As a bridal consultant, I know the moment I am within eyesight of my client, they are checking out my hair style, my makeup, my clothes... That first impression affects whether or not they decide to purchase something from me. (no pressure, Lydia) Sure, it's stressful but it pushes me towards perfection. When I roll out of bed, I know I need to look my best. Out of respect for my clients and to help the store by increasing our chances of a sale.
It's the same with books. I am 100% guilty of passing over books simply because the cover was too plain, too amateur, too this, too that, ect. The content could have been amazing but I'll never know. I'm too visual of a gal for the appearance of a book not to matter.
Which is why designing one for my own book is so stressful...
For both my book covers, I opted for the 99 Designs forum. Basically what happens is you buy a 'package' (Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum) and in return, a variety of designers compete with the covers they've designed. As of this moment, though perhaps not when this post is actually published, I am choosing finalists to go into the last round. Let me tell you, it is NERVE WRACKING. I dread and deeply desire to choose the winner all at the same time. It is such an exciting process and let me tell you why.
UPDATE: a winner has been chosen! Be looking for the cover reveal in about a week!
Your imagination is literally brought to life. Like magic. You see the images in your head transferred to a beautiful book cover, worthy of any quaint store. It's an amazing thing.

For me, it has been crucial that the cover for "The Seven Pawns" flow well with the cover for the first book, "The Seven Thrones". This means everything from color schemes right down to the font has been taken into consideration. I swear, I must be a nightmare of a client I'm so picky, but when all of this is on you versus a manager? You simply have to be 'that client'.
The cover must tell a story but simply a sneak peak...
I don't want to give much away to you readers. I know it's so much more fun to discover it through the magic of words. (because books are amazing, that's why) Yet it needs to be enough to draw readers in, to show them the quality of the work inside. I work hard at my craft and the cover should reflect that.
